Our experience indicates that routine maintenance and calibration of equipment, combined with crew training are the most important factors for good operation of a BWMS. Almost all of the times, when this is done, the BWMS will deliver as designed and installed.

Challenging Water Quality is any water that have parameters (temperature, salinity, Total Suspended Solids concentration, etc.) that fall outside of the System Design Limitations (SDL) of the BWMS or render some components of the BWMS inoperable (typically the filter). In those cases, the Ballast Water Management Plan includes detailed procedures on how to go about ballasting operations when the BWMS cannot cope with the water. This includes exchange + treatment in designated areas or the high seas, flushing of the tanks and pipes afterwards, and communication with port state and flag state prior to initiation of the process.

It is always a good idea to involve the maker of the BWMS for troubleshooting and support; Mouawad Consulting can support you either get in touch with the manufacturer of the BWMS due to our extended network with those makers, or send our own team to support you in troubleshooting and getting the BWMS up and running.
